Not to go against Ling Ling and the Mavyn workshop, but TM Juniors is also hosting their monthly workshops this Saturday at 1pm! Yours truly is teaching at 2pm! Featured teachers also include Monica Parales, Glen Dalida, Keiyana Jackson, Brandon Nguyen, and Kristine “Wobz” Bueta of Sheroes and TM’s ABDC crew. As always, there are a mixture of beginners, intermediate, and advanced classes. Peep the flier to see who teaches what at what time!

Wanna Be In the Spotlight?

That’s right, Mavyn Entertainment is hosting its fifth In the Spotlight workshops and battle! This Saturday, the 22nd, there will be sick classes all day, and the day will end with a battle, featuring the community’s best freestylers (and you could be one of them)! Past winners of the battle include Stephen “Twitch” Boss (of recent “So You Think You Can Dance” fame) and Mike Song of Kaba Modern, so this is one battle that you do not want to miss. Teachers of the workshops will include Dominic Byrd of Choreo Cookies, Jason Bueno, Jeff Viray, C.J. Edwards, JayChris Moore, and…more!

If you’ve never been to In the Spotlight, here’s how it works: choreographers will choose their favorites dancers from each class, and the “chosen ones” will perform in a mini-show for everyone at the end of workshops. It’s really fun, and a cool way to not only get some time in the spotlight, but to get to know other dancers and choreographers.

Mavyn will also be offering a FREE class at 11 a.m. to kick off the day. Check out the full lineup of teachers and the rest of the details below - see you there!

Urban Legends is Back!

EK Entertainment & Talent Co. is holding its Urban Legends workshop this weekend at Temecula Dance Company. Seriously, I’m not lying when I say that the lineup is NO JOKE. Tomorrow: Elm Pizarro , Ellen Kim & Brian Puspos. Sunday: Miguel Zarate, Rino Nakasone & Shaun Evaristo. TELL ME that’s not one of the sickest lineups you’ve heard in awhile. I was lucky enough to get a sneak peak of Elm’s choreo that he will be teaching tomorrow, and it’s off the chain. So don’t miss out! I’ll be there tomorrow for sure. Where would I be without dance?

I had the pleasure of taking Boogiezone Community Class last night from Marnita Billups of Team Millennia (the African Queen in TM’s “Freakshow” set), Sheroes and Expressive Doubt. So much fun and a total cardio workout, this girl will whip you into shape! She also took some time out to let us rest and explain that her piece was about just having fun, enjoying life, and giving thanks for the blessings that God has given us, particularly the gift of dance. I know some people just go to class to dance and not hear commentary from the choreographer, but personally I love it when teachers take a minute or two to explain where the movement is coming from; I think it really helps the dancers to feel the piece and actually dance it, rather than just go through the movements.

One particular statement that stood out to me last night was when Marnita simply said, “I don’t know where I would be without dance.” It’s something that we don’t think about every day, every rehearsal, every class, every show, but it definitely remains in the back of our minds constantly - Where would I be without dance? Personally, I would probably be a shy little Asian girl, super sheltered and narrow-minded. Where would you be without dance? Just think about it for a second.

So yes, thank God we found dance and celebrate it by taking class! I know, that was a shameless segue, but if you didn’t get the chance to take Marnita’s class last night, here’s another opportunity to get down with the African Queen tonight at Jayvee Dance Studio in Alhambra with none other than Mr. 2auce himself, C.J. Edwards. It’s gonna be a ridiculous collaboration, so check out the flyer below for complete deets. I’m going to try and run over there before rehearsal, so if you see me, say hi!

Common Ground x Kaba Modern

Common Ground will be hosting their monthly workshops this Saturday, Nov. 15 at One Performing Arts Center in Mission Viejo. In addition to sick teachers like Kaba Modern’s own Yosuke Murakami, they will be offering a free class taught by Jezzie Fajota and Grace Lee. With gas prices being hella cheap now, you can’t afford to miss out on at least the FREE class! So check out the flyer below for more info.

What Would Happen…

If you’ve been following our site for the past 2 months or so, you’ve either a) been keeping up with us as loyal readers or b) been trying to get the latest information for any auditions in the Southern California area. It’s insane when you think about it. Over 10 auditions since August, which means over 400+ dancers have come out to show their stuff and hopefully make it onto a team so that they can share the stage and compete against other collegiate dance troupes.

But in the midst of it all, you have to wonder: What would happen if all the teams had their auditions on the same day? Think about it…

For someone who’s been in this scene for 4 years, I’ve noticed a trickling effect: When dancers don’t make it onto one team, they go to the very next available audition, and depending on when (if ever) they are accepted onto a team, they call that team their family. But suppose they only had one shot to audition for a team all at the same time. How would that influence which team they’d audition for in the first place? Dramatically, I presume.

I’m not trying to say that this should happen. I’m not trying to say that each team should push to have their auditions first at the beginning of each new season. What I am trying to say is this: To those who aspire to dance on a team one day, choose one that intrigues you the most, not one that accepts you first. In the past I’ve seen and heard dancers questioned about their loyalty on a team, simply because they went through the “trickling effect.” It’s a shame that people have to go through that because loyalty shouldn’t be questioned unless disloyalty is proven. But there is some truth in that…

All in all, I just want to re-iterate the fact that our dance community is massive and constantly growing. We have so many amazing dancers and artistry that no one other dance community in the world could ever touch us. For all those who made it onto a team, congratulations and make the best of it. I’m really looking forward to seeing all the new faces on the teams! This year is going to be an amazing one, I can feel it!

Prelude Norcal 3!!!

Prelude Norcal returns to the wonderful city of San Mateo, and this year’s line-up comes with the usual and a couple of surprises. The usuals such as Phoenix Dance Co. and Shades will be present, but what’s surprising is that all three winners from last years competition will not be competing for various reasons. From what I know, the Company has opted out to focus on training and Booftroop has dissolved. Click here to peep the flier and line-up.

MCIA Auditions!

Ling just mentioned the massive amounts of auditions in the happenings, and this entry is certainly no relief to the crowding. Following the likes of its UCI Parking Structure brethren, Common Ground and CADC, who both had their auditions earlier this month, MCIA joins the bustling Fall audition season this Sunday with its audition workshops for the 2008-09 team.

Formed in 2003, MCIA is a prominent dance face on the UCI campus. One of the shiniest notches on their belt is having performed for the L.A. Clippers on the Staples Center court for the past 3 years. The coolest thing about this team is that they always stay true to themselves. MCIA has become the roots for many dancers that remain active in the community. Alumni have danced with CADC, Kaba Modern, Common Ground, Surreal, Mavyn Entertainment, Culture Shock LA, Funkanometry SF, De La Femme, Project Em, and Breed OC/LA (coughKhaiNguyencough). As an alumnus myself, I know that if you’re looking for a dance team that really puts family first, then this group you’ve got to check out.
