Back to Life, Back to Reality…

It’s a shame that TM got cut. Yes, there is an uproar, and of course, there are haters who say that it’s about time, and yes, there are arguments spewing all over the forums and youtube comments. But as I sit back and watch all this cyber retaliation unfold, I realize something: This show really makes people fired up to get their opinions heard, just like with any reality competition show. I’m sure there are just as many forums and blogs about American Idol or So You Think You Can Dance with people typing their opinions as if they are THE final, all-knowing voice of reason.

What I’d like to propose is a simple attitude of apathy. I could really care less what a cyber thug from New Orleans has to say about our team, or the opinions of an adolescent white chick from Canada. The only effect that it has on me is the desire to keep dancing and to do it better. Let’s face it: People who know little want to seem like they know a lot, and nothing could be more true than with dancing. Everyone’s a critic and dance is the hot new topic.

The common misconception about hip hop dancing/choreography is that it is all easy and that there is no technique, that anyone and everyone can pick it up without a problem. If you truly believe this, then you obviously do not dance. I remember someone posted a clip of the Company (aka Shaun Evaristo, Patrick Cruz, etc) on the MTV dance portion of the site, and there were SO MANY MTV users saying how much the performance sucked and “looked easy.”

-_-;;;

You can imagine the face I made when I read this and the emotions I was feeling. Don’t get me started on the technicality of this group, or just how inspirational and groundbreaking their choreography has been for the hip hop dance scene for over 5 years. I don’t need to get into all that stuff because some people just don’t care, and that’s fine. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, as ignorant as it may be. It is not my job to educate them or force them to see my side of the story. If they fail to see the artistry, the musicality, the technique, and the talent that is obviously there, so be it.

As far as TM being booted off of ABDC, let’s all remember this show is nothing short of ridiculous. Believe me when the seven members of TM have no ill-feelings towards Ringmasters (they are actually a very cool group of guys who were pretty close to TM). It’s just like last season when people were getting fired up over the decision between Fanny Pak and Team Millennia. Each group does what they do, and by the end of the day it’s all up to the judges (or producers, or whoever decides to boot). Any team going into this show should remember that it’s on National Television, meaning there are a lot of politics and drama the producers must abide by and build. I could go on and on about why TM got cut before the rest of the crews, but it’s just not in me to gripe about things that really don’t matter. The fact is our ABDC seven did what they have always been doing, and the whole Team Millennia family is so proud of everything that they’ve accomplished. This show or other people’s opinions (both negative and positive) do not validate us as dancers or as a family. The opinions we care about are the ones within our community, critics who actually have a background. I know I’m not the only one when I say that I would rather hear Marty Kudelka or Miguel Zarate’s opinion over Lil Mama’s.

So for all of you fanatics out there who just HAVE to say something, it’s time to get back to life and away from reality TV…

God bless
Shalom
