   I’d like to extend my appreciation for what That’s Fresh is doing here. I found this site accidentally from a youtube description about a year ago, and it outshines any vids that are posted anywhere else.

   The only “publicized” event here in the Bay Area is Prelude NorCal, but I like the ability to rewind and see the intricate choreo that these groups come up with.

   Once again, thank you!

   i’m a little biased, but i think kaba modern should have placed. i was in awe when i saw the video on youtube

   i wish the east coast had things like this. i know we have prelude ec, but that’d mean everyone on the whole east coast would have to head to jersey (or wherever it was at) to see it.

   I was at the show and I think Common Ground and Kaba Modern both were close to breaking into the placings. CG really impressed me this show, They were leading for me up until CADC went up and smashed it.

   The Vids are great, but watching it live is a whole different experience. Hiphopotamus, you should fly down for Body Rock or Fusion =P

    hiphopotamus, i go to college in boston, but im from fullerton. (GO TM!! ) there are definitely competitions on the east coast, such as THE MAIN EVENT, hosted by fr3sh this year and of course prelude ec. i think though that the level of awareness of the hip hop scene is definitely much, much lower than the west coast… im trying to start a thatsfresh kinda deal, but its really only for boston. any suggestions?

    really? damn, i haven’t peeped the common ground one yet. and yeah, i love watching the videos on youtube, but i’m sure watching it live would be a life changing experience for me. i just went to my first concert this past summer, lupe, and it damn near changed my life. it’s amazing being at a live show of anything.

    if you mean that the name of the comp is “east coast dance competition,” i’ve never heard of it, but if you mean in general that we have dance comps, i’ve heard of prelude eastcoast. and thanks, “your lyrics are bottomless” – i like that haha

    thanks for giving me the heads up on THE MAIN EVENT, i actually didn’t know about prelude ec until i saw vids when i searched for prelude socal. you’re right though, about the dance awareness over here. everything i learned about the west coast dance circuit was through reading blogs, team myspaces, and youtube. i got family in california, that’s how i got put on the whole dance thing. my uncle was in channel islands all-male, and is currently in non-stop. and another uncle showed me kaba’s fusion 2007 set a few summers ago. i’m kinda mad everythings in jersey though, they’re like the east coast version of california haha

    Not sure if this is an event that will be continued, however. The Website hasn’t been updated since 2008′s show. Former champions from, I believe, 2 years ago were Capitol Funk from George Washington Univ. Sounds like a neat opportunity if a trip out to DC is convenient

    @mikefal I’m going to torrent up the whole show when everything is done, but in your torrent apps, you can just select individual files, so if you’re only interested in a single team, just choose then when downloading

    @dsq Yes, however, I may have missed a bit of a few pre-show groups, so I apologize if your group were one of the first that I wasn’t able to get in terms of the whole show

    @greenbean yes, NSU is up as I’m writing this, the torrent is going up soon though since our servers have blasted through about 300gigs in transfers over the past 2 days (some serious cash coming outta my pocket =X ).

    #thatsfresh the only group that my cam died on was Sheroes, so I want to sincerely apologize. I have like a bit of the beginning of the set, and then about 75% to the completion of the set if you guys are still interested in seeing that.

    btw, I know I brought this up before like a year ago, but all these large shows don’t really make money on DVD sales, and I do this pro bono for the scene (reason why we actually get invited to film some of these big shows) as it’s just as much my culture as it is yours, but what do you guys think would be “worth purchasing” in order to help support these shows and our scene? (I know money is tight everywhere, but any input on what people think is worth it would be greatly appreciated by everyone involved in the scene/circuit)

    DVD sales at the big dance events are pretty much an old tradition of the past. with youtube and other video sites on the internet, many people would rather get free videos on the internet, even if they are low quality.

    i think what you’ve done with posting videos on thatsfresh is amazing. i live in vegas and its hard to make it down to socal to go to these shows. i go every once in a while. but these videos are the closet to real things i can get to. me and my friends have been watching these since the prelude06 vids.

    i think you should get some compensation for doing this all the time. i know recording, compressing, hosting, maintaining the vids is a hassle. so you are doing a lot for the community.

    maybe if the teams and companies that ran these shows, added a video fee to the initial registration, to assure you being there and recording. just a small fee of 1or2 dollars. that would give you a lot of money to compensate you for what you do as well as give good money for good web hosting. i know most dancers could spare, and would want to spare, a dollar to get these great vids up. say like 20dancers x 10 teams = a good amount haha. just an idea.

    as far as things that are ‘worth purchasing’ at the events. i would say the event tshirt is the best thing ive seen. the prelude08 shirts were dope and affordable. i dont know what the profits would be like with shirts, but i think that is best kind of thing a dance event could sell. dancers wear those shirts when they take classes or just randomly.

    anyways, just some ideas. thanksfor the vids again!

    probably not what you had in mind sean, but i’d totally be down to donate to this site for holding it down, especially when you come out with these vids (considering the costs of video and editing equipment). go install a donation button!

    i also love the idea of tees at events, as mentioned above. when recording artists do concert, some of the hottest items are probably the tour shirts. granted, seeing some of those tees may get old after a while as they’d be an annual thing. but having a new sponsor/designer each time around would be great.

    thanks sean you answered all my questions regarding the torrent situation.

    although i do like direct downloads….i really do think torrents are the way to go as long as people seed. i’m sure it will turn out well.

    the only thing i’m worried about is for those people who won’t understand what bittorrent is or how to use it. it may be troublesome to many and for even more it could be frustrating.

    instead of uploading to your own personal domain…maybe you should go back to mediafire or even rapidshare and megaupload. that might take the bandwidth problem off your hands.

    i would definitely rock a thatsfresh.com shirt.

    i probably hadn’t said this enough but good job sean and the thatsfresh.com crew for keeping the community near and far updated with the latest news. thanks.

    thanks sean and thatsfresh.com for these hq videos. i don’t live in cali so i have no way in seeing these shows live, and these videos are the closest to seeing the performances in perfect view. youtube just doesn’t cut it.

    @kayotic it’s something we will keep in mind. We’ll try to figure out a way to slip that in there without it seeming too cheesy.

    @aldrin I like that idea, but it’s something that would have to be agreed upon by the whole dance community. I think a video tax imposed on all dancers would seem kinda like wtf, but if it were somehow baked into the entry fees of dancers at competitions, I think it would seem more neutral. I know as a dancer, I wouldn’t mind knowing that part of my fee to compete/perform was going towards receiving copies of the videos after the show. Especially when it will benefit me as a dancer later on by watching and critiquing myself. Kudos on that thought, I will throw the idea around w/ HHDA and the ppl putting on the shows.

    #thatsfresh The videos will be there indefinitely now, so download at your leisure you guys. I apologize about the stupid 45second time limits, but for now it will have to do w/ all the bandwidth that’s going out.

    And for my final note, KM Legacy will be going up tomorrow (crossing fingers). Have a great weekend guys!

    Just outta curiosity, if your team had a video up on the net, would you take it down, and what are some pros and cons behind it? I’m just wondering because I know choreo cookies wanted their video offline and also km legacy, but maybe I’m just ignorant and can’t see why someone would want that.

    Pros as I see it (having a video up): free viral publicity, teams can understand the development of your style and watch growth, assist in pushing the creative limits of the scene by encouraging new innovative styles, and also you may not win a competition, but you might win most downloaded/watched vid

    Cons: teams might copy a piece (but in our community you get called out for w/o hesitation), perhaps the fear of people getting tired of your set, but I can’t see that being too incredibly valid. I need some help filling out this list.

    Thanks for your input guys, coming from the other side of the camera and screen it’s hard for me to get it, even as a choreographer and dancer myself, but I am really interested to learn the reasons why.

    well sean,

    i have understood competitive teams’ requests to remove them off youtube, especially when the set is planning on being used again. this makes sense, because you don’t want to reveal to your competitors what you’re bringing.

    i notice these same teams put up the videos once their set is retired. i don’t know if this is along the same lines for choreo cookies, but for km legacy i wouldn’t know what to say. i would imagine the viral possibilities and publicity would be appealing, but then again there is a logic to keeping them wanting more.

    the reasons could be for respect for art. musical theater doesn’t get recorded because it’s a living art, and is adulterated by putting it on film (why so many vilify film adaptations), and perhaps the same could be argued for these performances. this is not directed at any team in particular, but i do notice that the set is always more ideal in my head than after i watch it again on video.

    this of course i all just speculation. any thoughts?

    and i don’t think you have to wait between downloads either

    @jayfunk thanks for the suggestion, we actually used to use mediafire, but their max file size is too small for our videos. Our typical file size has been roughly ~120mb and that’s only with a low bitrate h264 compression and 96khz mono audio. The issue with the paid version of MF as well is that there is a bandwidth cap, so we’d be back in the same boat as we were in when my current media hosts. The 45 second delay is kinda crappy with megaupload, but I also paid for the account there so that the links will never die out and we get unmetered bandwidth with them.

    i prefer megaupload over all…better download speeds…i actually have a downloader called jdownloader. you just copy all the links and paste them in there. and pretty much it downloads it for you as you go watch tv or something. hit up google…its available for windows and mac. only download from the site tho.
