Vibe XIV Results

Some thoughts on the event: A well-deserved first-place trophy, this marks the first time CADC has ever won a Vibe competition. I’ve never heard the crowd go that wild for such an extended period of time as I did last night when CADC performed the closer to their set. So a big congrats. All the teams really brought it this year. I know everyone says that all the time but last night I felt that the bar was ridiculously high, and everyone was just killin’ it. Made me wish I was still competing (but without all the late night practices, staying out in the parking structure until the sun comes up). And props to the LTDs for putting on yet another successful Vibe. Thanks for the pizza and Lee’s sandwiches, haha.

I was running around backstage for a good duration of the show, but what I saw was just insanity. There were a lot of exhibition teams in the lineup this year, and all of them were really sick. It was really amazing to see all the old Kaba Modern heads on stage again with KM Legacy; it brought me back to the days when it was only $15 to watch Vibe and $12 with a student ID, hah. And Miguel Zarate really shut it down when he came out with that fur coat.

I don’t want to hog too much of this post talking about my own team, but in case you didn’t know, it was Mario and Clara Navarette’s last performance with Mavyn last night, since they will be moving to Chicago next month. Each of them have been such a presence in the scene, really since the hip hop dance community in California as we know it really started to get big. So thanks Mario and Clara, for the inspiration you’ve given not only the people you’ve danced alongside, but also anyone who has ever seen you on stage, been critiqued by you at the judges’ table, or been around you and experienced what amazing people you both are.

And not to be even more mushy, but I really felt as if Vibe was a breath of fresh air. All of the ABDC hype has been exhausting, and it was nice to be back at a show that has such deep roots in the dance community and around all of the people that have really been a part of the community for years. It was also nice to see new faces who truly love dance and the feeling it gives them to practice and perform next to their newfound families. Just being at the show really gave me hope that the real community is still there and will still be there after it’s all over and the dust has settled.
