Winter is just around the corner, and we’re all looking for new clothes to keep us both warm and fashionable. I’ve been working at this start-up company called Scoodie for awhile now, and we make this new fashion accessory called a scoodie: A scarf and hoodie combined together. Now I know that you think it must look ridiculous, but look at Brandon Harrell from IaMmE Crew rockin’ our turquoise design. I brought him over to our booth and he instantly loved the scoodie because of the fabric and its awesome funcationality: the hood comes off. Our scoodie is unique because it’s detachable! If you want to wear the scarf by itself, all you have to do is unbutton it! There’s even two pockets at the end of the scarf for you to keep your hands warm or just store your valuables! It’s a really cool product and company, run by some even cooler people.

Outreach Through Dance produces various annual events to give back to the community. As ambassadors of The Make-A-Wish Foundation, San Diego Chapter, OTD produces “Dance For A Wish” and adopts a wish child every year. Proceeds from that show go directly to The Make-A-Wish Foundation, San Diego Chapter. “Dance For A Wish” features a wide variety of hip hop and contemporary dances that convey a different message of hope, strength, love and passion. Most recently, OTD, in partnership with MASA/220’s FUSION Hip Hop Dance Competition, organized a city-wide shoe drive and collected 3495 pairs of shoes. With the help of Donate Your Old Shoes, a San Diego non-profit organization, those pairs will give comfort and prevent diseases to needy families in third world countries.

Words from Mari Martin:

I have done a good amount of shows in my 12-year dance career. From high-school talent shows, to being in the “other” category at a jazz competition, to under tents at festivals where curious people that know nothing about dance are drawn in by the music, to big competitions where the audience is a roaring sea. Big, small, incredible, awkward, funny, emotional; you name it. All have been great and all have added to who I am now as a performer. But last year I experienced something completely different at Dance for a Wish, or as we usually refer to it, “OTD.”

OTD is special. I remember distinctly the defining moment for me was not at the show, but at one of the finale rehearsals before. The wish child and her family came to watch for the latter part as we ran through transitions and the ending number. A tiny and vibrant little girl, a bit shy, watched us intently, only letting herself put out small fits of excitement when she thought nobody was looking. Even though she was so small, every dancer in the room felt her presence. At the end, Melissa, the director of the show and creator of OTD, had our wish child practice running in for the bow at the end. She held on to Mel’s hand tightly and we all could sense the much-needed joy that she felt at that moment. As she ran out, the entire cast watched and cheered behind her. It was then, seeing her face in the mirror as I stood behind this tiny little body, I felt so overwhelmed with purpose for why I was dancing.

OTD is something that is vital to our dance community. It is the most important show I could do all year long because its only motive is to give. A group of people coming together to do something they love so passionately, and use it for the benefit of someone else. I cannot imagine my childhood being invaded by so much struggle, but the aim is to give a gift to one who truly, truly deserves it. I believe that the purpose of my life is to embody love as best I can and this is a tangible way to fulfill my purpose alongside my peers. I am so grateful to be a part of the vision that Melissa has brought to life. It’s about dance yes, but really it’s much deeper. OTD is an illustration of what the power of Art can do to affect society, to make our world better, and most importantly to show genuine love toward our fellow man. And it’s not about one person doing this or that, it’s about us as a community of dancers coming together to sweat in rehearsal, to put the work in it, and to pour our hearts into something unselfish and pure. I will always be a supporter of OTD no matter if I’m on the stage or in the audience, and I pray that it will continue to grow and shed it’s light to inspire many in the years come.

If that didn’t make you want to go and support, then I don’t know what will.

The Carnival “Choreographers Ball” has been a staple for Los Angeles dancers for over a decade, but the showcase travels to the midwest for the very first Carnival Chicago this Wednesday, May 11! For those looking to enjoy a night of Chicago’s best dance performances, this event is the place to be. The Chicago hip hop scene is growing exponentially, and this is definitely one way to show your love and support for the talented, up-and-coming artists in the area.
